How it works
How German salary tax is estimated
The calculator annualizes your salary when you choose a monthly period, then estimates taxable income by subtracting employee social insurance contributions and the employee lump-sum work expense allowance. It then applies the German 2026 §32a income tax formula.
Employee social insurance uses 2026 contribution rates and caps for pension, unemployment, public health insurance, and nursing care insurance. If private health insurance is selected, the calculator uses your monthly private insurance amount instead of statutory health and nursing care contributions.
FAQ
Is this Germany Income Tax calculator payroll accurate?
No. It is a planning estimate. Real payroll can vary by tax class, children, health insurer, private insurance, church membership, pension details, state, benefits, and employer payroll handling.
What tax classes are supported?
This first version supports Class I/IV as a single-tax style estimate and Class III using the splitting method. Classes II, V, and VI can be added later with more payroll-specific rules.
What social contribution rates are used?
The calculator uses 2026 employee-side estimates: pension 9.3%, unemployment 1.3%, health 7.3% plus half of the additional health rate, and nursing care based on the selected child status. Contribution ceilings are applied.
How is private health insurance handled?
If private health insurance is selected, the calculator subtracts the monthly private insurance amount you enter. It does not estimate employer reimbursement, tariff details, spouse or child coverage, or private nursing care premiums separately.
Can I enter monthly salary?
Yes. Select the monthly salary period and the calculator annualizes the amount before applying German tax and social insurance estimates. For example, €6,000 per month is treated as €72,000 annual gross salary.
Does it include solidarity surcharge?
Yes. It estimates the 2026 solidarity surcharge using the annual income-tax threshold and phase-in rule, so many middle-income cases show no surcharge.
How does church tax work in this calculator?
If you select church tax, the calculator applies 8% of income tax for Bavaria or Baden-Wurttemberg and 9% for other German states. Select not applicable if you are not subject to church tax.
What does taxable income estimate mean?
It is a simplified estimate after subtracting employee social insurance contributions and the employee lump-sum work expense allowance from annual gross salary. Actual taxable income can change with deductions and personal circumstances.
Why does public health insurance have an additional rate?
German public health insurers can charge an additional contribution rate. Employees generally pay half of that additional rate, so changing it can affect estimated net salary.
Does this calculator include employer contributions?
No. It focuses on employee-side deductions and take-home pay. Employer contributions are important for total employment cost but are not deducted from the employee's gross salary in this estimate.
