How it works
How Australian salary is estimated
The calculator uses the 2025-26 resident income tax bands: no tax up to A$18,200, then 16%, 30%, 37%, and 45% marginal bands. Foreign resident mode removes the tax-free threshold and starts at 30%.
For residents, the Medicare levy option applies a simplified 2% of taxable income. Employer super is shown separately using the selected super guarantee rate and the maximum super contribution base.
FAQ
Is this Australia salary calculator payroll accurate?
No. It is a planning estimate for quick salary comparison. Actual payroll can change with HELP/HECS repayments, tax offsets, salary sacrifice, allowances, leave loading, residency, Medicare levy reductions, and employer payroll timing.
Should I enter salary including super?
Use the package includes super dropdown. If your offer says A$100,000 plus super, choose no because super is added on top. If it says A$100,000 package including super, choose yes so the calculator separates cash salary and employer super.
What tax year is used?
This page uses 2025-26 Australian tax settings. Salary calculators should show the year clearly because marginal rates, thresholds, Medicare settings, and super contribution rules can change between financial years.
How is Medicare levy estimated?
The calculator applies a simplified 2% Medicare levy when selected. It does not model low-income reductions, family thresholds, exemptions, private health insurance impacts, or Medicare levy surcharge.
How is employer super calculated?
Employer super uses the selected super guarantee rate and applies the maximum super contribution base. When package includes super is selected, the calculator estimates how much of the package is cash salary and how much is employer super.
What is salary packaging or salary sacrifice?
Salary sacrifice means giving up part of cash salary for benefits such as extra super or other approved benefits. This calculator does not model detailed salary packaging, so enter only the expected taxable cash salary after any arrangement you already understand.
What is the difference between gross salary and taxable income?
Gross salary is your pay before tax. Taxable income is the amount left after eligible deductions. In this calculator, taxable income is estimated as cash salary minus annual work deductions.
What deductions can affect Australian taxable income?
Common work-related deductions can include eligible work expenses, professional fees, self-education, work travel, or home office costs. Eligibility depends on Australian tax rules, proof, and whether the expense directly relates to earning income.
Why is foreign resident tax higher?
Foreign residents generally do not receive the Australian tax-free threshold, so tax can start from the first dollar of taxable income. Residency for tax can be different from visa status, so use this as an estimate only.
Does this include HELP or HECS repayments?
No. Study and training loan repayments are not included yet. If you have HELP, HECS-HELP, VET Student Loan, or similar repayment obligations, your actual take-home pay may be lower than this estimate.
Does this include bonus or commissions?
You can include predictable bonus in the annual salary field for a broad full-year estimate. For irregular bonus, commission, or overtime, test a separate scenario because withholding can differ by pay cycle.
Does monthly take-home pay include super?
No. Employer super is not monthly cash in hand. The chart shows it separately so you can understand total employment value versus spendable salary.
Why can two jobs with the same package have different take-home pay?
Take-home pay can differ if one package includes super and another pays super on top, or if allowances, deductions, salary sacrifice, bonus structure, residency, or private payroll settings are different.
How should I use this calculator before accepting an offer?
Compare the cash salary, not just the total package. Check whether super is included, estimate monthly take-home pay, and then compare that against rent, transport, insurance, debt repayments, and savings goals.
